Is it possible to bicycle in the winter?
Most people throw their bicycles in the storage room after the summer. But cities like Oulu and Copenhagen are known for year around bikers - why not Helsinki? There are many reasons for that. Too much snow and ice on the bike trails, no appropriate cycling gear or maybe the idea just feels unpleasant. In many cases, the reason is one’s attitude since cycling is the fastest way to get around in the city centre, also in the winter.
To help, inspire and encourage people to use their bikes during winter, Måndag launched the Winter Cyclist of the Year competition. We looked for passionate winter cyclists and gave five of the best candidates a Canon Legria Mini-camera. They blogged about their experiences and gave the audience tips about riding their bikes in the winter. How to dress for winter cycling, how to improve traffic planning or what kinds of ideas could be provided to improve winter cycling? The contestant with the most popular videos was crowned in the winter cycling event. There are more winter bikers in Helsinki, but we still have a lot of work to do. The next competition will be run in the winter of 2016.
