Are we welcome in your backyard?
Not in my backyard, said many in Töölö in 2013. A boarding house for homeless youngsters was caught in a heated conversation both against and for the location of the centre. Life isn’t easy for young people and sometimes a new place to stay can mean a fresh start in life. This is something that the people of Töölö had to understand.
Understanding and acceptance are created both with information and emotion. This is why we created a play in collaboration with the Q-theatre. The play is about the life of the youngsters who live in the boarding house and the goal was to show them something more than statistics.
This goal was achieved.
“This play isn’t really about some troubled kids but about the fact that anyone can end up needing a boarding house and support. It rather asks what it would feel like if you were a young person in need of the boarding house.” - HS 22.9.2014
